Investing in Tomorrow’s Consumers: Understanding the MEGATRENDS driving Bajaj Finserv Consumption Fund

Consumption, a major driver of economic growth, is on the cusp of a boom in India. Recognising the investment opportunities presented by this, Bajaj Finserv Asset Management Ltd. has launched the Bajaj Finserv Consumption Fund.

Invest in Bajaj Finserv Consumption Fund

This is an open-ended equity scheme following the consumption theme. The fund, which invests in multiple sectors that are likely to benefit directly or indirectly from domestic-led consumption and demand, began its New Fund Offer period on November 8th, 2024. The NFO period – where the scheme is opened to investors for the first time – will end on November 22nd, 2024.

The fund follows a MEGATRENDS approach, focusing on opportunities emerging from evolving consumption patterns in India.

MEGATRENDS of the Bajaj Finserv Consumption Fund
Megatrends are large, transformative shifts that have the potential to shape industries, societies, and economies over a long period. These include technological advancements, demographic changes, urbanisation, climate change, and shifts in political powers. Understanding megatrends helps organisations and individuals anticipate challenges and opportunities in an evolving global landscape. By aligning with these shifts early on, investors can potentially capture the long-term growth opportunities they offer.

For its consumption fund, Bajaj Finserv AMC has identified some key megatrends that are yet to reach their full potential.

  • Demographic dividend and e-commerce

India is experiencing a demographic dividend, which is the increase in economic growth potential arising when a country’s working-age population is higher than that of dependents. In India, the rise of a young workforce that is tech-savvy and open to innovation has led to opportunities in the e-commerce space. As the use of the internet and smartphones grows, online shopping platforms are emerging for everything from groceries to fashion. This has resulted in rapid growth in the e-commerce base.

  • Rising consumerism and urbanisation

With increasing urbanisation, people are moving from rural areas to cities, leading to a lifestyle shift and, subsequently, higher spending. As more people move into cities, they are also exposed to global brands and diverse products, which fuels consumerism. There has also been significant change in consumer behaviour, spurred by these social and economic shifts. Discretionary expenses on luxury, entertainment, dining and lifestyle products are on the rise.

  • Scope for increased FMCG consumption

Fast-moving consumer goods are products that are relatively low-cost and sold and consumed quickly, such as personal care items, food, and beverages. India’s FMCG market has room for significant growth. The per-capita FMCG consumption in India is presently low and holds significant growth potential in the medium and long term. Another emerging opportunity in this space is the shift towards premium products, especially in the home and personal care segments.

With increasing disposable incomes, people in both urban and rural areas are likely to increase their spending on FMCG products and move towards branded goods.

  • Growing adoption of online food delivery

Another major trend reshaping consumption is the adoption of online food delivery services. With busy urban lifestyles and increased smartphone penetration, ordering food online is becoming increasingly common. The online food delivery market is growing rapidly in India, thanks to convenience and a wide array of choices offered by food delivery platforms. However, the sector is still underpenetrated in India compared to more developed countries. As a result, this scheme has the potential to offer significant growth opportunities as more and more people seek quick, hassle-free meal options.

  • Real estate

As urbanisation increases, so does the demand for housing, commercial spaces, and infrastructure. The real estate sector stands to benefit significantly from this demand, driven by urban migration and the rise of middle-income households seeking better living standards. Real estate is important not just for residential spaces but also for supporting retail, such as construction companies, home furnishings and appliances.

  • Automobiles

India is witnessing a shift towards premium vehicles as people seek higher quality and advanced features in their vehicles. Consumers are now willing to spend more on premium brands and advanced technology in automobiles, reflecting a trend towards aspirational purchases.

What is driving this boom
India is witnessing a significant transformation in consumption patterns, and this shift is driven by rising incomes, improved technology, and evolving consumer aspirations. Today’s Indian consumers are vastly different from those of even a decade ago. They are more informed, more connected to global trends, and open to experimenting with new products and services.

Young people, especially, are shaping new trends as they actively seek out products that offer convenience, quality, and variety. Consumers are also becoming more brand-conscious, choosing products that reflect their identities and preferences.

The Bajaj Finserv Consumption Fund seeks to tap into India’s unique consumption landscape. By spotting and investing in megatrends before they are fully realised, the fund aims to create significant long-term growth potential.

For investors, the Bajaj Finserv Consumption Fund offers an opportunity to be part of this growth story.

How to invest
You can invest online or offline, through Bajaj Finserv AMC, distributors and aggregator platforms, among other avenues. Investments (SIP and lumpsum) start at Rs. 500. You can use tools like a mutual fund SIP calculator or compounding calculator to help plan your investments.

Units are available at a face value of Rs. 10 during the NFO period. Once the NFO ends, the scheme will be reopened for subscription after a few business days.

Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.

G Square: The Game Changer of the Real Estate Landscape in India

What would you have said if I asked you to buy a plot within a city five years ago Many would have called it impossible. Today, however, the story is different-and much of the credit goes to brands like G Square, who have been instrumental in introducing plotted development within urban centers. As a result, the real estate market has seen a paradigm shift in recent years, and leading this transformation is G Square, a pioneer in plotted development within city limits. Breaking away from conventional real estate models, G Square introduced a groundbreaking concept: selling urban plots in prime locations-a domain once dominated by high-rise apartments and villas.

G Square revolutionizes urban living with exclusive plotted developments in the heart of the city

As G Square recently celebrated its 12th anniversary, the company reflected on its journey of innovation and growth. From identifying a gap in the market to establishing plotted developments as a mainstream choice, G Square has consistently stayed ahead of the curve, reshaping urban real estate with a vision that has stood the test of time.

This visionary move has not only redefined urban living but also revolutionized investment preferences, paving the way for individuals to own customized homes in secure, well-planned plotted communities. With this bold step, G Square has carved a niche in the real estate industry, emerging as a true game-changer.

Redefining Urban Living: G Squares Historic Shift from Outskirts to City-Centric Plotted Communities
Traditionally, plots were available only on the outskirts of cities. G Square disrupted this trend by offering plots in sought-after urban locations such as Chennai and Coimbatore. By blending the freedom to design independent homes with the advantages of modern amenities like landscaped parks, clubhouses, and 24/7 security, G Square introduced a holistic lifestyle concept.

Post-pandemic, G Squares innovative approach seamlessly aligned with the evolving needs of homebuyers. The after-effects of the pandemic brought a heightened desire for individual space, privacy, and autonomy, as people sought to move away from the constraints of shared living and community restrictions. This perfect synergy between market demands and G Square’s vision has successfully shifted buyer preferences from apartments to plotted developments, sparking a trend that continues to redefine urban living.

A Model of Scalability and Growth
G Square leveraged two of the most critical aspects for organizational success-growth and scalability-to establish itself as a market leader in the real estate landscape. By strategically selecting significant land parcels in prominent locations at fair prices, G Square ensured these properties met market standards, delivering both value and consistency. This meticulous approach allowed the brand to cater to evolving buyer preferences while maintaining its competitive edge.

Building on this foundation, G Squares innovative business model-eliminating commission-based intermediaries and acting as a direct retail player-has further strengthened its position. By minimizing overhead costs and passing on the savings to buyers, G Square not only ensured affordability but also delivered superior quality, offering a product that is significantly larger and more premium than its contemporaries. This strategic approach has fueled exponential growth for the brand, cementing its reputation as a trailblazer in the real estate market.

Bringing Tier-I Living Standards to Emerging Cities
From Tier-I cities like Chennai, Coimbatore and Trichy to Tier-II and Tier-III towns like Dindigul, Pollachi, Ambur, Udumalpet, and Theni, G Square has steadily expanded its footprint, making premium plotted communities accessible across diverse regions. Through this strategic expansion, G Square has successfully introduced Tier-I city-standard residential living to Tier-II and Tier-III markets, offering premium-quality homes that elevate the expectations of these regions. By delivering modern amenities, secure communities, and a refined living experience, G Square has raised the bar for residential living quality in these areas.

With over 100 successful projects and 12,000+ happy customers, G Square continues to drive a new era of plotted development, offering unmatched value and quality. G Square’s remarkable journey is a testament to its commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction, cementing its legacy as a game-changer in Indian real estate.

  • 80% respondents benefited from credit card offers on e-commerce platforms

  • 85% card users planned festive shopping around shopping festivals on e-commerce platform to maximise savings

A survey by Paisabazaar, India’s largest marketplace for consumer credit and free credit score platform, revealed a strong consumer preference for online shopping during festive season. More than 48% of respondents who used credit cards for their festive shopping chose only e-commerce platforms, another 45% shopped majorly online with some purchases at physical stores, whereas only 7% said they preferred in-store shopping, making online platforms a clear choice for the majority.

This trend is attributed to attractive discounts and deals offered by e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart during their festive season sales. Approximately 85% of credit card users said they planned their festive shopping specifically around these e-commerce sales, to capitalize on credit card-based offers and other discounts.

The survey revealed that 80% benefited from discounts and offers, 48% shopped online on e-commerce platforms, and 85% planned shopping around shopping festivals

The survey found that over 80% of the respondents benefited from discounts and offers on their credit card on e-commerce platforms, compared to just 11% who took advantage of offers on their cards at physical stores, further underlining the preference for online channels. Only 9% said they did not find any major offers on their credit cards this festive season.

Rohit Chhibbar, Head of Credit Cards, Paisabazaar, said, “The shift towards online shopping during the festive season reflects a clear consumer preference for convenience and value, driven by attractive credit card offers on major e-commerce platforms. From high cashback to no-cost EMI options, credit cards are now empowering consumers to access greater value in their purchases, which ultimately strengthens the ecosystem of digital transactions and customer loyalty. At Paisabazaar, we are committed to enable our consumers choose the right cards and make informed decisions in usage to make most of the benefits.

Credit card users who shopped online revealed that they made highest savings through card-specific offers on leading platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. Around 2 out of 3 of these shoppers also said they have credit cards that are specifically designed around shopping-related benefits on online and offline purchases. Higher cashback and accelerated reward points were other popular ways how people saved on online platforms through credit cards during festive season.

No-cost EMI option also emerged as a powerful motivator for online purchases, with 68% of credit card users opting for EMI facilities and 57% specifically selecting no-cost EMI. This trend highlights how online shopping platforms, through flexible payment options, continue to make high-ticket items more accessible, further strengthening online shopping as the preferred choice for festive spending.

Gadgets, clothing and accessories, and home appliances emerged as the top three categories for festive spending. Over 75% of respondents reported that they primarily spent on gadgets such as smartphones and smartwatches, likely driven by significant discounts offered on these items during major sales events like Amazon’s Great Indian Festival and Flipkart’s Big Billion Day.

Survey details: ~700 credit card users; 45% from Tier 1 Metros; 68% salaried; 76% under 35 years

The Akshaya Patra Foundation Amplifies the Partnership with BW LPG India to Fuel Mid-Day Meals Across India

The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a non-profit organisation focussed on providing unlimited food for education for Government & Government-Aided school children as the implementing partner of PM POSHAN program, is pleased to announce the significant expansion of its partnership with BW LPG India, the nation’s largest owner and operator of Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). This collaboration signifies a strengthening commitment towards improving childrens nutrition and educational outcomes across India.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation and BW LPG India celebrate the expansion of their partnership to support nutritious mid-day meals for children across India

Since 2017, BW LPG India has been pivotal in India’s LPG supply chain, accounting for about 25% of the LPG supply into India. As a subsidiary of the global leader BW LPG, the company brings international standards and substantial capabilities to the partnership.

The partnership, initiated with a Memorandum of Understanding in late 2023, designated BW LPG India as the Energy Partner for nine of Akshaya Patras centralized kitchens in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Over four months, this alliance facilitated the preparation of approximately 12 million mid-day meals distributed to children from over 2,200 schools.

Further solidifying their commitment, BW LPG India recently undertook the construction of dining sheds in Bikaner, Rajasthan, enhancing the dining infrastructure for children at two schools. The renewed MOU for the fiscal year 2024-25, encompassing an additional three kitchens, projects the support of nearly 42.7 million midday meals.

Mr Kristian Sorensen, Chairman of the Board of Directors, said, “BW LPG India’s corporate purpose is to deliver energy for a better world, and it has been very rewarding to be the Energy Partner for the Akshaya Patra Foundation. With our specialization in delivering LPG into India, we want to support Akshaya Patra’s energy needs in their central kitchens as they deliver midday meals to children. When we join forces, we can transform lives with energy.”

Mr. Dhananjay Ganjoo, Chief Resource Mobilization & Marketing Officer at The Akshaya Patra Foundation, remarked, “Our collaboration with BW LPG India has been transformational not only in scale but also in the sustainability of our operations. Their continued support underlines a shared vision for a healthier, better-educated generation. The upcoming projects in Odisha, introducing greener, LPG-powered kitchen equipment, mark a significant leap towards environmentally sustainable meal production.”

The signing of the MOU between The Akshaya Patra Foundation and BW LPG India

This partnership also extends to humanitarian efforts, with BW LPG India contributing INR 20,00,000 providing relief kits for 1,667 families, which ensured sustenance for 15-16 days, towards the Assam Flood Relief works initiated by Akshaya Patra. Additionally, a pilot project is underway to convert a briquette boiler to an LPG boiler for a kitchen serving mid-day meals to 580 rural schools in Odisha, requiring an investment of Rs. 2 Cr. This project involves the installation of two dual-fired boilers of Rs 5,225,000. The operational expenses for the first three years are projected to be Rs. 14,515,224, accounting for a 4% increase in meal demand and 7% inflation. This collaboration aims to enhance clean cooking and meal quality for children in need.

As both organizations prepare to implement their newest MOU from October 1, 2024, to March 31, 2026, this venture promises to further leverage cutting-edge technology and resources to support underprivileged children across India, making a direct impact on their daily lives and long-term well-being.

Why do Indian Students want to Study Abroad

From meager 50,000 Indians going to study abroad in 1999, the numbers have risen to almost 1 mn in 2024. The growth is pegged to be somewhere around 1.5-2 mn students studying abroad in 2025. While its inevitable to become a global citizen in the 21st century, what has caused the advent Why do Indian students study abroad What are the reasons Will it be sustainable Is that brain drain A simple yet informative analysis follows.

Edvisory at the Choose France Tour organised by French Embassy in India

Here are some of the reasons why Indian students study abroad

Information Era: With growth of internet availability and penetration in the Indian subcontinent, more and more Indians and their families are now aware of international opportunities

Internationalization: With India becoming hub to international organizations, more Indians are now getting global opportunities to travel and explore options beyond the limits

Affordability: While the per capita for the country is still around USD 2700, there is still a massive middle and upper middle class that wants to get that foreign degree, regardless of their reasons and motives

Rankings: While Indian universities are getting global recognition, some of them find place in global rankings like QS, THE, FT as well, the numbers are still meager when compared with international universities

Life standard: Though its debatable, students would want to have a better and seldom higher standard of living as compared to cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore when compared against cities like London, Paris, Stockholm.

Options & Competition: While studying abroad in India for most means studying in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, a lot of students and their parents are now exploring options in Europe as well. The European Higher Education system is not just one of the oldest, prestigious but also extremely affordable. I am sure you would have heard of the pro bono education system of countries like Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Norway where tuition is almost NIL. One excellent example is TU Munich of Germany where Engineering costs almost nothing and you get a degree from a university that ranks almost 100 places above Indias premier Engineering institutions. That said, a huge factor that cant be ignored is the cut-throat competition, more than a million Indian students sit for the prestigious IIT JEE, 200K for IIMs, competing for mere thousands of seats thus leaving very few opportunities for majority of brilliant talent

Job Opportunities: No doubt, getting a job abroad is extremely challenging especially when you have a lottery system in the US for H1B, saturated markets in Canada, UK, and linguistic barriers in continental Europe, still students want to take that bet because commanding a language can be tough but not impossible. I personally believe, a foreign language is a life-long skill as against a 98% in CAT or 720 in GMAT

Settlement opportunities: Most countries offer a 5-7 years pathway to residency which also plays a huge role in attractiveness as tomorrows Indians are travelers, and when it comes to global travel, a foreign passport makes life very easy, especially for those considering a career in Consulting, International business development etc.

Social Security: Many countries offer almost free or extremely affordable social security to international students, employees, as opposed to paying a huge premium in India for healthcare. For eg: France offers one of the finest social security system to international students and thus countries like China, India and others in South Asia, East Asia are seeing a surge in outgoing students to these countries

ROI: Most Indians would want to study at IIMs, IITs and several other elite Indian universities but mere tuition of some of these schools is unaffordable and sometimes beats the cost vs ROI analysis when compared against some of the European universities

Example: Top tier IIMs cost around 25-30 Lakhs INR in tuition and an additional cost of 4-8 lacs for cost of living, exchange programs, thus with an overall investment of 30-40 Lacs, students will have to think twice given the return on investment (at least immediate) is still sub par. A 25 lacs CTC post a 40 lacs MBA will take 5-7 years on average to pay off that education loan.

Summary:

Is it worth studying abroad in 2024

Well, the short answer is YES if you are clear what you want to achieve out of it. If you are looking for a global mindset, international network and accelerated career growth, a foreign education can definitely play a huge role.

Is it worth settling abroad Is India not a great place to study or work anymore

In my personal capacity, I do not agree with this notion. US, Canada, UK were all great opportunities to study, work or probably settle there post their Industrial reforms, that led to a surge in opportunities for international students. The regions are becoming saturated now. While on the other hand, India remains the fastest growing large economy and offers a plethora of opportunities for students to study and find work in India. In the famous words of Indias External Affairs minister, Mr. S Jaishankar, India’s ‘brain drain’ not entirely negative

I have been consulting Indian students for almost 8 years now and I do not paint a rosy picture, people often ask me, Why not Why did you come back Why didnt you settle abroad

I often tell them, there are 3 kinds of Indian students:

Students who want to study abroad and come back immediately for jobs/family business/entrepreneurship

Students who want to study abroad and work for a few years to explore opportunities, get exposure and build an international network before returning home

Students who just want to settle abroad

I associate myself with the 2nd category and I personally believe most students must travel abroad, study abroad and should work abroad as well. Studying Abroad is not just about a fancy degree, fancy city and great life, its about a journey of self exploration, discovering yourself, your potential and making a mark. As the 21st century belongs to India and many other developing countries like Brazil, South Africa, Nigeria, Vietnam, students would find a better career growth in these regions in the long run than chasing the foreign dream. Studying Abroad must be made mandatory for Indian students (even UPSC officers study abroad for exchange programs but they serve at the very ground level for the betterment of the nation) but settling abroad must be a decision of their own conscience.

Indians studying abroad have given us people like Sundar Pichai & Ratan Tata, who in their own personal capacities have made India proud.

In the end, Id like to mention one simple thing that changed my life and may help you too, Always ask yourself, what do you want to do with your life and why Rest of the questions like where, when, which, how will answer themselves on their own.

The discussion further emphasised the need for managers to constantly evolve and acquire new skills, aligning with the events core theme that todays managerial role must balance high performance with adaptability and empathy. Panellists shared personal anecdotes that underscored the joys and challenges of the profession.

The conversation delved into the relevance of emerging skills, such as artificial intelligence and the necessity for continuous learning, all deemed critical for future managers. Despite the focus on new-age competencies, the panellists unanimously vouched for the enduring value of traditional age-old skills like networking and ability to spot opportunities.

The event aimed at presenting the students with actionable insights and reinforced the vital importance of developing a versatile skill set in preparation for their careers, equipping them to thrive in a dynamic professional landscape.
